In partnership with Duke Energy, the town of Chapel Hill installed LED street lights on a prominent block of Franklin Street, the site of many community and university celebrations. The LED lights are the newest example of the many steps Chapel Hill is taking to become a more environmentally friendly community.
The LED street light pilot is expected to show that energy for street lighting can be reduced by 50 percent and that maintenance costs will be minimized. The town has set an aggressive goal of reducing carbon emissions by 60 percent below 2005 levels, by 2050.
“Joining Cree’s LED City initiative is an important part of Chapel Hill’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and becoming a fully sustainable community, “ said Mayor Kevin Foy. “By replacing high-pressure sodium street lights with LEDs, Chapel Hill can reduce energy consumption for street lighting, which we hope will positively impact our budget as well as our carbon emissions.”
