Torraca made the commitment to convert 100 percent of its outdoor lighting to LED in mid-2007. The results included a 75-percent energy savings over the traditional lighting that was replaced.

“Our goal was to convert all street lighting to LED technology. We achieved 100-percent LED lighting throughout our streets in the fall of 2007,” said Mayor Faniele Filizola. “We are more than satisfied with the dramatic energy savings and are planning additional LED
conversions throughout our city.”

Torraca chose LED street lights made by Elettronica Gelbison srl and has continued to promote to other Italian cities the benefits of moving to LED lighting.

Making Sense

"The City spends substantial amounts of money every year replacing and maintaining lighting. What the LED City initiative means is not necessarily that we will be spending more, but spending more wisely on emerging technology that will save a lot in the long run... The whole point of declaring this public/private initiative is to develop a long-term plan to save money and take advantage of LED technology to spend smartly. The goal is to get the best lighting value for the citizens of Raleigh and serve as a model for other cities seeking to do the same."

Dan Howe, Deputy City Manager, City of Raleigh, NC
