Parking Garage Lighting
Parking garages can represent a challenging environment for lighting solutions. The lighting must economically accommodate vehicular and pedestrian traffic, must endure harsh environments and must address public safety considerations. Parking garage lighting is an excellent application for LED lighting for several reasons.
- Most parking garage lights burn 24 hours-a-day - during peak electrical rates
- The vibration from vehicle traffic creates a harsh environment for traditional light sources
- Public safety concerns favor white light and a high color rendering index (CRI), and "burned out" bulbs can create safety hazards
LED lighting addresses these realities and also provides other benefits including:
- Long lifetimes and highly reliable service, greatly reducing maintenance costs
- Not affected by most vibrations and typical temperature variations
- Highly efficient light source potentially reducing electricity consumption by up to 50% or more
- White light available in color temperatures from "warm" to "cool" with high CRI providing high-quality white light
- Amenable to control systems such as motion sensors and photoelectric controls to further reduce electricity consumption
Installations
Raleigh, NC
The first LED City installation, completed in February 2007, is in the city
municipal parking garage in downtown Raleigh, NC. The 141 light fixtures on level
three of the garage were converted from high-pressure sodium (HPS) fixtures to
LED lighting fixtures supplied by Lighting Science Group Corporation. This
conversion reduced the electricity consumption of the lights on level
three by 40%, as measured by Progress Energy, the local electric utility.
In addition, the light quality was greatly improved, as shown in the photos below. Based on a random survey of garage customers, conducted by Mindwave Research, users opinions of the light quality improved by 100%. Moreover, the number of survey respondents who perceived the garage as "very safe" increased by 76% with the new LED lighting.
