Fairview officials designed the new Fairview Parkway with LED lighting in mind. A key concern was light trespass and Dark Skies compliancy, and they hoped new LED fixtures would address this issue as well as be more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly.

The first section of the parkway opened in July 2009 with 82 EvoLucia LED street lights, using about 50 percent less energy than the traditional alternative they replaced.

“The quality of light is superior to even the higher quality we had anticipated and is far better than what could have been provided by traditional lighting,” noted Mayor Sim Israeloff. “Our town can reduce maintenance costs, improve safety, practically eliminate light pollution and dramatically reduce energy consumption with LED lighting.”

According to town officials, Fairview taxpayers will benefit from the $250,000 that can be saved due to lower energy use and maintenance-cost savings realized over the lifetime of the LED fixtures.

Making Sense

"The City spends substantial amounts of money every year replacing and maintaining lighting. What the LED City initiative means is not necessarily that we will be spending more, but spending more wisely on emerging technology that will save a lot in the long run... The whole point of declaring this public/private initiative is to develop a long-term plan to save money and take advantage of LED technology to spend smartly. The goal is to get the best lighting value for the citizens of Raleigh and serve as a model for other cities seeking to do the same."

Dan Howe, Deputy City Manager, City of Raleigh, NC
